Google Business Profile verification has changed considerably over the years.
Gone are the days when most businesses could request a postcard, wait for it to arrive, enter a code and get on with running their business.
Today, you might be offered phone verification, email verification, video recording or a live video call. Some businesses are verified almost immediately, while others find themselves stuck in a seemingly endless verification loop.
And to make things interesting, Google decides which verification methods you can use.
This updated FAQ covers the current Google Business Profile verification process, with particular attention to video verification, Service Area Businesses, rejected submissions and getting help when things go wrong.
Google Business Profile Verification Methods
Which Verification Methods Are Available?
Google currently offers several verification methods, although not every method is available to every business.
- Video Recording: Record a continuous video showing your business location, operations and proof that you manage the business.
- Phone or SMS: Receive a verification code through an eligible business telephone number.
- Email: Receive verification instructions through the email address offered by Google.
- Live Video Call: Show your business location and operations to a Google representative during a live call.
- Postcard: Receive a verification code by post, where this option is available.
- Automatic Verification: Some businesses may qualify for immediate verification, potentially through existing Google account and website signals.
- Bulk Verification: An application process for eligible businesses operating ten or more locations under the same brand.
Google determines the available methods using factors such as your business category, location, public information and opening hours.
In some circumstances, Google may also require more than one verification method.
Can I Choose My Preferred Verification Method?
Generally, no.
Google automatically determines which verification methods are available for your Business Profile. You cannot simply request email verification because you do not fancy recording a video.
If Google offers several methods, you can choose between those presented.
If video verification is the only option, you will normally need to complete it or seek assistance if a genuine technical problem prevents you from doing so.
Google’s Business Profile verification guidance confirms that verification methods are selected automatically.
Is Postcard Verification Still Available?
Yes, but it is no longer something every business can rely on.
If Google offers postcard verification, it will send a code to the business address supplied during setup.
Most postcards arrive within 14 days, although delivery times can vary.
Do not request another postcard simply because the first has not arrived after a few days. Requesting a replacement invalidates the previous code.
Changing the business name, address or category while waiting can also invalidate the code.
Can Google Verify My Business Instantly?
Yes, some businesses can be verified without completing the usual manual process.
Google may already have sufficient information to establish a relationship between your Google account, website and business.
For example, an existing verified website in Google Search Console can sometimes contribute to automatic verification.
However, this is not guaranteed.
I have previously discussed the importance of establishing consistent business information and Google account ownership before creating a Business Profile. It can help reduce unnecessary complications, but it is not a magic shortcut around Google’s verification requirements.
Video Verification Requirements
Is Video Verification Now the Main Verification Method?
Video verification has become a significant part of Google’s verification process, particularly for newly created profiles and businesses requiring additional checks.
Google uses the video to establish three things:
- The business exists at the location provided.
- The business genuinely carries out the activities described in its profile.
- The person submitting the video is authorised to represent or manage the business.
That third point is particularly important.
Simply filming a shopfront or a van parked outside a property is not necessarily enough. Google also needs evidence that you have control of the business.
How Long Should My Verification Video Be?
Google requires a video of at least 30 seconds.
The video should be long enough to show the required evidence clearly, without including unnecessary footage.
Aim to keep it under five minutes and concentrate on demonstrating the business location, operations and management access.
A short, well-planned video is considerably more useful than several minutes of wandering around hoping Google will spot something relevant.
Can I Record My Verification Video in Advance?
No.
Google requires the video to be recorded directly through the Business Profile verification process using a mobile device.
You cannot record a video using your phone’s normal camera application, edit it afterwards and upload the finished file.
The recording must be continuous and unedited.
You can, however, practise beforehand. In fact, I would recommend it.
Work out exactly what you need to show and the order in which you will show it before starting the official recording.
Can I Complete Video Verification on a Computer?
No. The recording itself must be completed on a supported mobile device.
If you start verification on a desktop computer, Google may provide a QR code allowing you to continue on your phone.
Make sure your mobile device has a working camera, sufficient battery, location services enabled and a reliable internet connection.
You will also need to be signed in to the Google account associated with the Business Profile.
Should I Speak During My Verification Video?
You can, but you do not need to.
Google is primarily looking for visual evidence of the business, its location and your authority to manage it.
You do not need to narrate every movement or give Google a guided tour of your entire working day.
Concentrate on showing the relevant evidence clearly.
Can People Appear in My Verification Video?
It is best to avoid filming people unnecessarily.
Google advises against including faces and sensitive personal information in verification videos.
This can become awkward when recording inside a busy shop, restaurant or other customer-facing business.
Where possible, record at a quieter time and avoid capturing customers, staff faces or private information.
Do not include bank account details, identification numbers or other sensitive documents that Google does not need to see.
Storefront Business Video Verification
Which Evidence Does a Storefront Business Need?
If customers visit your business premises, Google generally wants evidence of the location, permanent business identity and your authority to manage it.
Your video should aim to show:
- Exterior Location: The building, entrance, street name, building number or recognisable nearby businesses.
- Business Signage: Permanent signage displaying the business name used on your Google Business Profile.
- Interior: The reception, sales floor, equipment, products or working areas relevant to the business.
- Management Access: Unlocking the premises, accessing staff-only areas, operating a till or using business equipment.
The important point is demonstrating that the location and business are genuine and that you have access beyond what an ordinary member of the public would have.
Does My Business Need Permanent Signage?
For a storefront business, permanent signage is an important part of demonstrating that the business operates from the stated location.
The signage should display the real business name, consistent with the name used on the Business Profile.
A temporary piece of paper taped to a door is unlikely to provide the same confidence as established business signage.
This can be particularly problematic for businesses operating inside shared premises, office buildings or commercial units.
Make sure the video clearly establishes which business occupies the location and where customers would find it.
Can I Verify a Business Inside Another Business?
Potentially, provided the business is genuinely eligible for its own Google Business Profile.
For example, an independently operated business within a larger premises may qualify if it meets Google’s requirements.
However, the verification video must demonstrate that the business genuinely exists at that location, has a distinct identity where required and is managed by the person submitting the verification.
Simply renting a desk or using another company’s address does not automatically make a business eligible.
Service Area Business Video Verification
Can I Verify a Business That Operates From Home?
Yes, provided the business meets Google’s eligibility requirements.
Service Area Businesses, such as plumbers, electricians, cleaners and mobile mechanics, often operate from residential addresses while visiting customers at their locations.
The address should be hidden from the public if customers are not served there.
However, Google still needs to verify the genuine operating location.
Hiding your address from customers does not mean hiding it from Google.
Which Evidence Does a Service Area Business Need?
A Service Area Business must demonstrate that it genuinely operates from the location supplied and provides the services listed on its profile.
Useful evidence can include:
- Location: Street signs, building numbers or recognisable surroundings near the business’s operating location.
- Business Equipment: Tools, machinery, products and other equipment used to provide services.
- Branded Vehicles: A work van or vehicle displaying the business name, where available.
- Business Materials: Relevant uniforms, printed materials or business documents.
- Proof of Management: Unlocking the work vehicle, accessing business equipment or demonstrating control of the operating location.
One useful example is showing the location, unlocking a branded work van and then demonstrating the tools and equipment used by the business.
That provides considerably more evidence than simply filming a van parked on the street.
Google’s video verification requirements explain the different evidence expected from storefront and Service Area Businesses.
Do I Need a Branded Vehicle?
No, not every Service Area Business has a branded vehicle.
A branded van can provide useful evidence, but it is not a universal requirement.
You can demonstrate the business through relevant equipment, materials, documentation and proof of management.
The important point is that the evidence supports the actual business being verified.
A cleaner, electrician and mobile hairdresser will naturally have different equipment and operating arrangements.
Google needs to see evidence relevant to the business, not a collection of items that have nothing to do with its services.
Can I Verify My Business From a Customer’s Property?
Be careful with this.
Although showing tools and services at a customer’s property may help demonstrate the work you undertake, Google also needs to establish the business’s operating location.
For a home-based Service Area Business, the address supplied to Google remains relevant even though it is hidden from customers.
I would concentrate on recording at the genuine operating location, showing the surroundings, equipment and evidence of management.
Do not assume that filming yourself carrying out a job at a random customer address will satisfy every verification requirement.
Video Verification Problems
My Verification Video Will Not Upload
This is one of the more frustrating problems because you may have recorded everything correctly, only for the upload to fail.
Before attempting another submission, check:
- Your internet connection is stable.
- Your phone has sufficient battery and available storage.
- Camera, microphone and location permissions are enabled where requested.
- The recording meets Google’s duration and format requirements.
- Your browser and mobile operating system are up to date.
If the upload continues to fail, try a different reliable connection or compatible mobile device.
Do not repeatedly change your Business Profile information in the hope that it will fix a technical upload problem.
If the issue persists, you can request verification assistance through Google’s status tool.
How Long Does Google Take to Review Video Verification?
Google states that verification reviews can take up to five working days, although occasionally they take longer.
Some businesses receive confirmation much sooner.
If your video has uploaded successfully and is still being reviewed, avoid starting unnecessary new verification attempts.
You can use the Google Business Profile verification status checker to establish whether the profile is verified, pending or still requires action.
If the review has exceeded the expected timeframe, use the available support options.
My Video Verification Was Rejected
If Google rejects your video, look for the Review issues notification.
Google may indicate which parts of the verification did not meet its requirements.
For example, you may have demonstrated the business location but failed to show sufficient proof that you manage it.
Or you may have shown the equipment and business operations without establishing the actual location.
Review the feedback carefully before submitting another video.
Do not simply record the same thing again and hope for a different result.
Can I Preview My Video Before Uploading?
Yes. Google’s current video verification process includes an opportunity to review the recording before submitting it.
Use it.
Check that the signage is readable, the location is recognisable, and the evidence of management is clearly demonstrated.
If you have missed something important, record the video again before submitting it.
That is considerably easier than waiting several days for Google to reject an incomplete submission.
Google Keeps Asking Me to Verify Again
Repeated verification requests can occur when Google cannot establish sufficient confidence in the information supplied.
Sometimes the video does not contain the required evidence. Other times, there may be inconsistencies in the business information or a technical problem.
If you have already submitted several videos, stop and review the requirements before attempting another.
Check the business name, address, category and eligibility, together with the evidence you are providing.
If everything appears correct but the process continues to fail, use Google’s support workflow rather than endlessly repeating the same unsuccessful submission.
Verification Codes and Alternative Methods
My Phone Verification Code Is Not Arriving
If Google offers phone or SMS verification, make sure the business number can receive the relevant calls or messages.
Automated telephone systems and interactive voice response services may prevent verification calls from getting through.
Check that the number displayed by Google is correct and that your telephone system is not blocking the call.
If the offered method cannot be completed, contact Google support for assistance. Do not assume that editing the telephone number will automatically unlock another method.
My Email Verification Code Is Not Arriving
First, confirm that you have access to the email address Google has offered for verification.
Check your spam or junk folder and allow sufficient time for the message to arrive.
If the email address is incorrect or inaccessible, you may need to use another available verification method or request support.
Google determines which email addresses are eligible for verification, so you cannot necessarily substitute any address you prefer.
My Postcard Verification Code Does Not Work
If Google rejects your postcard code, check whether another postcard was requested after the original.
Requesting a replacement invalidates the previous code.
Changing the business name, address or category while waiting can also invalidate it.
Google’s verification codes expire after 30 days, so an old postcard may no longer be usable.
Use the most recent valid code and avoid making unnecessary changes while waiting for verification.
Google Says No More Ways to Verify
This message can be particularly frustrating because you are effectively being told that the available verification process cannot continue.
If Google displays No more ways to verify, look for the available contact support option.
You can also try the Google Business Profile Verification Status Tool to check the profile and access any relevant support workflow.
Make sure you are signed in with the account that manages the Business Profile.
If you reach a support form, explain exactly which verification methods have failed and provide the requested business evidence.
Business Profile Reverification and Suspensions
Can Google Ask Me to Verify Again?
Yes.
A verified Google Business Profile can be required to complete verification again.
This can happen following significant changes to business information, including an address change or other updates that Google considers important.
Google may also request further evidence to confirm that the business information remains accurate.
Verification is not necessarily a one-time event.
Will Changing My Business Name Trigger Reverification?
It can.
Changes to important business information may trigger additional checks, including reverification.
Your Google Business Profile name should reflect the genuine name used by the business in the real world.
Adding locations, services or keywords purely to influence rankings can create problems beyond verification.
Make sure the business name is consistent with your actual signage, website and relevant business documentation.
My Business Profile Was Suspended After Verification
A suspension is not the same as an unsuccessful verification.
If Google suspends your Business Profile, you need to establish the reason and follow the appropriate appeal process.
Check that the business complies with Google’s eligibility and representation guidelines before submitting an appeal.
A Google Business Profile suspension for deceptive content requires a different approach from a profile that needs verification.
And please make sure the documents you submit actually support the business information on the profile. Sending Google a pile of unrelated paperwork is unlikely to improve matters.
Can I Change My Business Information After Verification?
Yes.
You can continue updating your business information after verification, including opening hours, contact details, services and other relevant information.
However, significant changes may trigger additional checks or require reverification.
This is another reason to get your business information correct before creating the profile rather than making repeated changes immediately afterwards.
Multiple Location Verification
Can I Verify Several Business Locations Together?
Potentially.
Google offers bulk verification for eligible businesses with ten or more locations under the same brand.
However, this is not simply a case of uploading ten locations and expecting Google to verify everything automatically.
The business must meet Google’s eligibility requirements and complete the bulk verification application.
Service Area Businesses are not eligible for this bulk verification process.
Google may also request additional evidence, including video verification, to establish that the business genuinely operates the locations claimed.
Does Bulk Verification Automatically Verify Every Location?
Bulk verification is an account-level approval process for eligible businesses, not a shortcut that every multi-location business can use.
Once approved, eligible profiles managed through the verified account or business group can benefit from bulk verification.
However, profiles owned by somebody else, suspended locations or businesses that do not meet the requirements can still create complications.
If you are managing a growing chain, it is worth understanding the process before creating large numbers of locations. My guide to setting up multi-location Google Business Profiles covers the wider management considerations.
Google also provides bulk verification guidance covering eligibility and the application process.
Getting Google Business Profile Verification Support
Can I Contact Google About Verification Problems?
Yes, although the support options available can depend on the problem and the Business Profile account.
Start with Google’s Verification Status Tool.
Select the relevant profile, review its status and follow the available support options.
If Google directs you to a support form, provide a clear explanation of the issue and any supporting evidence requested.
I have covered the process in more detail in Verification Help via Status Tool for Google Business Profiles.
Can a Google Product Expert Help With Verification?
Yes, particularly when you are struggling to understand a verification failure or cannot progress through the available support options.
The Google Business Profile Help Community includes experienced Product Experts who can help identify problems, explain Google’s requirements and suggest appropriate next steps.
In some circumstances, they may be able to flag an issue for further review through available channels.
However, Product Experts are not Google support employees and cannot simply approve your Business Profile verification.
When posting in the community, explain the problem clearly, include relevant screenshots and avoid sharing sensitive business or personal information publicly.
Getting Verified Without the Headaches
Google Business Profile verification is intended to establish that a business genuinely exists, operates from the location supplied and is being managed by somebody authorised to represent it.
The difficulty is that legitimate businesses do not all operate in the same way.
A high street retailer, home-based plumber, shared office business and national chain will have very different ways of demonstrating their existence.
That is why preparing the right evidence before starting verification matters.
Check that your business information is accurate, understand the requirements for your business type and plan your verification video before pressing record.
And if something fails, take the time to understand the reason rather than repeatedly submitting the same information.
Online Ownership provides Google Business Profile troubleshooting and consulting, helping businesses deal with verification problems, profile suspensions and other issues that can make managing a Business Profile unnecessarily difficult.
Because getting your business verified should not become a full-time job in itself.
