Calling all sixth form and college career advisors. If you’re looking for something a bit different for your tech students, I may have just the thing to add a spark to their future career path — and it’s something most people have never even heard of.
Google’s Product Expert Programme
Let’s get one thing clear from the start: this isn’t a job, internship, or a fast-track into Google. What it is, however, is an opportunity to become part of one of Google’s largest and longest-standing communities and earn recognition, experience and connections that genuinely stand out on a CV.
The Google Product Expert (PE) Programme is a global community of knowledgeable and passionate volunteers who help other users get the most out of Google’s products. With over 1,300 Product Experts covering more than 50 products in 24 languages, this is a space where real-world skills meet real-world application.
Your students could be part of it.
The Product Expert Programme
Google relies heavily on its user base to help support and improve its vast product range. Product Experts do precisely that, from answering community support questions and helping users troubleshoot problems, to providing feedback and testing new features before public rollout.
Here’s the best bit: while the Product Expert Programme isn’t a formal qualification, it comes with some serious perks and exposure.
The Perks of Being a Product Expert
Product Experts receive:
- A badge that displays publicly on their Google profile
- Access to private PE communities and networking groups
- Direct connection with Googlers (yes, real Googlers) to receive updates and give feedback
- Beta testing opportunities and early access to features
- Virtual hangouts with teams from around the world
- Invitations to annual Product Expert Summits (Google covers travel for top-level PEs)
- Branded swag and a strong global community of tech-obsessed volunteers
In short, this is the type of extracurricular involvement that makes a recruiter stop and look twice.
Skills That Translate
Let’s not get carried away thinking this is just about Google products. If a student is interested in SEO, UX, community management, analytics, coding, mobile, support or digital marketing, there’s a Google product they can dig into and become an expert in. Think Gmail, Google Ads, Android, Google Business Profiles, Google Maps, YouTube, even Gemini and Google Search.
They’ll gain:
- Deep product knowledge that goes far beyond casual use
- Experience in user support, troubleshooting and issue resolution
- Direct exposure to product workflows, community management, and public moderation
- Real accountability and communication with an international audience
- In some cases, first-hand experience shaping how products evolve
It’s not just theoretical learning – it’s practical experience in live ecosystems used by billions of people.
Real World Application
In my decade as a Product Expert (specifically in Google Business Profiles), I’ve seen members of the programme go on to become product leads, support managers, community consultants, and even start their own agencies.
A strong foundation in how Google tools work and how users interact with them can make someone invaluable in both B2B and B2C roles. And when someone strikes out on their own, being publicly recognised by Google as an expert doesn’t hurt either.
The personal development side of this can’t be overlooked. Being part of a global community, connecting with people who geek out on the same tools, and building confidence through helping others – that’s hard to match elsewhere.
Oh, and the annual summit with Googlers around the world? Worth it alone.
The Nitty Gritty for Careers Advisors
This isn’t a formal school programme. There’s no textbook or exam. Students can choose which product interests them, learn by doing, and progress at their own pace.
It suits self-starters, the quietly curious, the ones who are already helping family members with tech, or digging into analytics for fun. You don’t need to be a coder. You just need curiosity and consistency.
If you’d like to introduce this to your students, I’d be happy to give a talk.
I’m based in Northamptonshire and happy to visit schools and colleges locally. For others further afield, we can set up a Google Meet presentation. This would include:
- A 20-minute intro presentation (by me, interpreting the Googlespeak into plain English)
- Followed by live Q&A with your students
- And a short dive into AI and search, because let’s be honest – that’s where they’ll have questions
For Parents
If you’ve found yourself on this page while searching for careers in tech, and your child’s school isn’t exactly leading the charge on careers advice, this might be something worth exploring.
If you think your son or daughter would genuinely be interested in this and could benefit, feel free to reach out. We can jump on a quick Google Meet, and I’ll do my best to connect them with a mentor from within the Product Expert community that aligns with their interests.
Note: When I say “child”, we’re talking young adults here — you’ll need to be at least 16 years old to join the Product Expert Programme.
About Me
I’m Tim Capper, Owner of Online Ownership and local SEO consultant. I’ve been working in search for 20 years and have been a Google Business Profile Product Expert for just over 10 of those. I now serve as a Google Product Expert Ambassador, and I want to open the door to this little-known opportunity for students ready to explore something beyond the usual CV padding.
There’s no catch, no cost: just real knowledge, real community, and a real leg up for those willing to jump in.
