Tips When Applying for a Business Grant

When applying for a Business Grant:

Apply appropriately, completely and on time.

  • Talk to the funding provider directly about your project idea.
  • Use the funding provider’s website to clarify key funding information and their guidelines.

Read the guidelines carefully, understand them and stick to all of the instructions provided.

  • Work with the pre-application process to ensure that bids are focused and
    clear.
  • Always keep the deadline in mind.

Do not assume knowledge:

  • If you are unsure of something, contact the funding provider by telephone or email to clarify.
  • Ensure all permissions required are investigated and approved prior to applying.

Ensure you prepare and submit concise supporting information and documentation. Set out clearly:

  • the need;
  • what activities you will carry out to meet the need;
  • describe what changes or benefits you expect to see; and
  • describe why you are the best organisation to carry out this work.

When describing how you will monitor your progress and measure outcomes, make sure you are realistic and willing to do what you say you will do.

  • Present all individual costings associated with the project, not just the total amount.
  • Provide clear descriptions (including specifications) of what the funding will be used to pay for.
  • Ensure match funding is in place or secure.
  • Be honest with yourself about whether your project actually addresses the priorities or stated aims of the grant fund. If it doesn’t, don’t waste time and resource by applying.
  • Use other contacts – such as business advisers – as useful points of reference

Identifying the right business grant is imperative to funding success but equally, finding a program that matches your project goals and objectives is a key contributing factor to the right business support service.
